Some
other towns well worth a visit are Luso, with its natural
spring, Monte-mor-o-velho, Oliveria do hospital and Carregal do
sal. If you venture to the top of the Serra de Estrella
mountains you can visit the town of Seia, which lies in the
foothills. The Cities here are rich in Portuguese history,
Coimbra with its world famous library and old university and
Viseu with its fine architecture. For archaeological interest
there is the Roman excavation of Conimbriga, and the village of
Piodao, built entirely of xisto stone. Natural areas include buçaco,
mata de Marganca, Vale do Alva and Fraga da Pena which has a
beautiful waterfall, Figueira da Foz is a good day out if you
fancy a swim in the sea, with it’s wide sandy west coast
beaches and pretty candy stripe beach huts, always a fun day out
for the children.
